We know people aren't quite as into maps as we are, so we thought we would cover a fresh, new topic.
As some of us were left with gobs of 2008 Halloween candy, we thought it might be interesting to see how well it held up over time and you guessed it, see if we could give it out for Halloween 2009. This is extremely fortuitous for us given the current state of our economy. (We are only willing to use it if it tastes perfectly fine. Some of us have reputations at stake. If this sort of thing got around our neighborhoods just imagine the havoc it would cause.)
Therefore, as a public service for all those interested, we happily share our findings for the first scheduled taste test. Incidentally, as a quick Google search revealed, no real creditable sources turned up. I am not talking about what the manufacturer says about the shelf life. I mean real, actual testing. One thread actually revealed:
I work for a company that makes chocolate. Since chocolate contains a lot of wax it will keep for over a year.
Chocolate contains a lot of wax. That is just what everyone wants to hear. I am so happy we are conducting our own study and do not have to rely on goofy postings chocked full of info you do not really want to know anyway.
Here are the findings:
Snickers, Almond Joy and Health Bars seemed perfectly fine. M & M's, both plain, peanut and the tiny varieties all fared really well. I am certain it is due to the candy coating. As for the tootsie rolls, the brown flavor is always a tasty treat but we only had the hideous fruit flavors left. Even though they did not taste good to begin with, we didn't seem to think they experienced any deterioration at this juncture. The Rolos were all stuck together. We will reserve judgment on this because it is not clear how this happened. We were unable to taste them because they looked gross and we were kind of full from tasting all the other stuff. To be fair, we will taste the Rolos first next time.
We have two more tastings scheduled at nine and twelve months. We will certainly keep you posted. Perhaps we will include photos next time.
